In Memoriam of Mike Preston

Our General Manager, Mike, passed away on January 24, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with his health. Mike was a 36 year resident of Fairview, and was in the fire service for 31 years. After retiring as Fire Chief from the city of Newark, Mike served our community on the Fairview Fire Protection District (FFPD) board from 2010 to 2012. When Mike and his wife Terry moved out of the District in 2013, he was no longer able to serve on the board. Later in 2013, Mike was asked to come back to serve as a fire service consultant, and in 2017, he was hired as the District's General Manager. Mike served the District community up until mid January, when he decided he needed to resign his position due to his health. Mike was extremely decicated to the District, and continued to work until he physically could not anymore. His dedication and professional leadership has guided our board through numerous achievements.
- Continued strong fiscal budget policy
- Two Five year strategic plans
- Our ongoing service contract with the Hayward Fire Department
- Our resident chipping program
- Numerous governance and procedures policies
- Our vegetation management and abatement policies
- Our ongoing alternate emergency evac route planning
- Our website upgrade under CA State required ADA compliance laws
- Helped the District to attain the certificate of transparency

The work he did will forever leave a mark on our District. He will truly be missed by us all. He was a mentor and friend to all of us board members. Please keep Mike's family in your thoughts and prayers. As a board, we pledge to honor Mike's legacy and will continue his vision for a strong and fiscally sound District.
